Malas are a type of meditation beads or prayer beads and are ancient tools that were developed to keep the mind focused and clear from thoughts.
Why 108?

There are 108 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Mala: garland in Sanskrit
The Sun’s diameter is said to be 108 times larger than the diameter of the Earth. “Coincidentally” the distance between the Sun and Earth to be 108 times the Sun’s diameter!
108 marma (acupressure-like) points on the body.
Mala beads are used in many cultures and religions but are known by different names, such as prayer beads, rosary beads, and worry beads.
Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism all use some form of prayer beads, even in Greece their is a history of worry beads known as Kompoloi.
